End 'Wanted Wednesdays' in Sault Ste. Marie

  • av: Jamie M
  • mottagare: Sault Ste. Marie residents

Crime Stoppers and Sault Ste. Marie Police Services partner with local media outlet, SooToday.com (Digital Intelligence Group) to publish a series of articles every Wednesday. The title is always "Look who's wanted this Wednesday", and it includes a mug-shot, full name and charges detailed for everyone to see.

Those who sign this petition request Crime Stoppers cancel the program, and SooToday.com stop publishing the articles.

Why is it important to cancel the program?

1) Young people in Sault Ste. Marie are represented in these articles, and this information will follow them, even as the course of their life changes. Are these the stories we want told about young people in SSM?

2) The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms section 11(d) states people are "presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal". Is this just?

3) Crime happens, but putting a face on crime further marginalizes groups of people. Crime Stoppers claims this program prevents crime. But this money could be better spent supporting Youth Social Services, and social justice.
