A beautiful granite rock spire rises from the northern Great Plains that can be seen for many miles. Shaped like a Bison horn, the most sacred site has been referred to for millions of years by the Lakota Sioux as Grey Horn Butte.
Many Lakota say that the sacred Canunpa (misnomer peace pipe) was given to the people here by the White Buffalo Calf Woman. Many Indigenous Red Nations utilized this area and have their own stories and histories about the significance of this most sacred site.
However, in 1875, a u.s. military official, Richard Dodge, racistly mislabeled the grey horn-shaped butte Devil's Tower, as a bigoted, evil gesture against the indigenous peoples who utilized - and still use - the area for ceremonial purposes. The u.s. government has yet to change the name back to Grey Horn Butte.
The volcanic monument was the very first national monument proclaimed as such by the u.s. Because the name is very disrespectful to Indigenous Red Nations who find this place so holy, please demand your legislator and government officials strive to facilitate an immediate and appropriate name change for this most special site.
