Congress, We Need Elections Oversight!

After the Florida presidential election debacle of 2000, the United States created the US Election Assistance Commission to protect voter rights and make sure that votes get accurately counted. The Commission has been doing its job--working with local communities, training poll volunteers, and trouble shooting voting issues.

But that commission is currently leaderless. President Obama has nominated candidates for leadership, but they have not been ratified. Meanwhile, Republicans who oppose the commission are trying to do away with it altogether. The GOP is also active in roll purging, the same practice that disenfranchised hundreds of Black voters in Florida in 2000. Clearly, the Republican Party sees itself as having nothing to gain from fair elections.

Tell the United States House of Representatives that you want the US Election Assistance Commission to continue. Democracy needs transparent, fair elections with every registered vote counted.

We the undersigned believe that America needs the US Election Assistance Commission (EAC).

The unfair and disastrous events that plagued Florida during the 2000 presidential election are not a thing of the past. Even now, GOPs are doing the same roll purging that took away voting rights for hundreds of Black Florida voters in the Gore/Bush race. At a time when we need election oversight, your Republican members are lobbying to defund the EAC.

Fund the EAC and ratify its nominated leaders so they can protect the interests of democracy!
