Mental health and developmental disorders in schools

1 in 4 people will experience some form of mental illness in their lives, and 1 in 5 people have a developmental disorder. But yet public knowledge of these disorders is scarce, we learn about physical problems, we teach our children not to stare at those who are different, and yet we tend to ignore disorders that involve the mind.

And yet there is only one mention of Mental Illness on the national curriculum within a non-statutory programme at key-stage 4. And developmental disorders are no more than very breifly touched upon in another non-statutory programme.

We believe that information on mental and developmental disorders should be included on and compulsary within school curriculums, especially as 1 in 4 of those in the classroom may develop such a disorder and even more may be effected by them witnessing them in friends or family.
