DBQ's should be stopped from all 8th grade classes

I'm reaching out with a heartfelt plea to remove DBQs (Document Based Questions) from all middle school classes. Just last night, I found myself buried under a mountain of work, highlighting why this needs immediate attention. I already have lots of work in other classes, and adding a 9-page DBQ on top of that workload felt impossible. I stayed up until midnight trying to get through the assignment, and I could only finish half. This is just too much.

DBQs were originally designed to assist students in developing critical thinking and analytical skills. However, the overwhelming amount of work associated with DBQs is causing unnecessary stress and anxiety among students like myself. The mental toll of such assignments is turning what should be a valuable educational experience into a burdensome task.

According to a study by the American Psychological Association, increased academic pressure can significantly affect students' mental health, leading to issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. The sheer volume of material in DBQs is counterproductive and adds to the struggle, instead of enhancing the learning experience.

An education system should aim to foster curiosity and a love for learning. There are numerous alternative approaches to achieve these aims. Schools could focus on more hands-on learning projects, interactive discussions, and shorter writing assignments that still teach students the necessary skills without overwhelming them.

By removing DBQs from the curriculum, we can create a healthier, more balanced educational environment that encourages students to excel without harming their well-being. Let's demand changes that reflect the needs and realities of today's students.

Please join me in calling for the removal of DBQs from middle school classes. Sign this petition to help create a more supportive educational system that prioritizes student well-being. Together, we can make a difference.
