Children of divorced parents should keep the same standard of living in both homes

  • av: Soledad Palacios
  • mottagare: The 7th Judicial District Steuben County Family Court, New York State. Support Magistrate, David M. Crosby.

Very soon a parent receiving public assistance will present a case to the above family court, trying to modify a previous court order. While on public assistance in the State of Pennsylvania, the court finds this parent liable for payments that total $666.00 a month. That court ruling lacks  principles and it is wrong.

Specially when the other parent, a highly specialized physician, is a step away from belonging to the one percent of the economic strata of this American Society, pays no child support.

Please tell this court that no children in this country should live on SNAP the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, when the other parent lives a financial bonanza. These children spent 43 percent of their lives on public assistance, and the remaining 57 percent in a household with an income that is exceeding that of their neighbors and friends.

Please tell this court, well off people should not have their children on public assistance, taking resources away from those who are truly unfortunate, and depend on them, this is wrong. The money should be allocated to the children regardless of the other parent’s ability to afford legal representation.

We, the undersigned, are concerned about how justice ignores the treatment these children and parent receive who reside in your district.

We urge you to consider a plan to give these children fair access to both parents’ income, regardless of which parent can afford legal representation.

Kindergarten and first graders do not understand why one parent cannot afford to provide and maintain the same standard of living the other parent gives them. No child in your country should experience such disparity of financial resources, resulting in the child being on public assistance when the other parent has substantial earnings.

Sincerely,
