It is important for the fans of ABC-TV's cancelled daytime drama Port Charles that its history and vampire characters Caleb and Livvie keep their integrity intact.
When we Port Charles fans read that General Hospital would be featuring references to the Port Charles vampires Caleb Morley and Livvie Locke Morley, we were thrilled that there would finally be an acknowledgement of our beloved, prematurely cancelled daytime drama and its supernatural storylines. Although we greatly appreciate the “nod” to Caleb and Livvie on Port Charles, we hope that this storyline will turn out to be more than just a brief or caricaturish attempt at homage, for they, along with the rest of the Port Charles cast, were beloved characters, and their fans, myself included, want to see them given due consideration as characters who existed in the past and may still be existing somewhere. We do not want to see them dismissed as products of Lucy’s hallucinations or lose their unique vampire aspects.
Having Michael Easton play Caleb Morley again would bring an exciting, revitalizing spark to ABC’s only existing daytime drama. I enjoy seeing Michael Easton in all his roles; however, his portrayal of Caleb Morley was my favorite. It has been over nine years since Caleb Morley was last seen on TV, yet numerous fans still mourn the passing of Port Charles and its head vampire. We Port Charles fans have signed petitions and written letters begging for our show to be given a second chance. Articles have also been written urging a return of Caleb, and he continues to be included in lists of favorite vampire characters. Since vampires and supernatural storylines are increasingly popular, now would be the perfect time to bring back the long-missed, never forgotten Caleb Morley. Caleb could still be a part of the plot without having vampires be a major part of the General Hospital landscape. He could, for example, be an identical vampire relative of Detective John McBain, or McBain could be one of Caleb’s alter-egos who, like Father Michael Morley on Port Charles, believing himself human, was able to assume a benevolent mortal persona. Being a vampire was a very important aspect of Caleb's personality, and his romance with Livvie, its eternal, mystical, larger-than-life quality was partly a result of his vampire nature. He had a passion surpassing that of mortals, a code of existence that couldn't be limited by human conceptions. He and the vampire storylines of Port Charles offered an alternative to the boring, commonplace, repetitive plots of other daytime dramas. In fact, many of us were drawn to Port Charles because of its supernatural elements. New viewers, especially those who enjoy True Blood, the Anne Rice novels, or Twilight might, likewise, be attracted to General Hospital if it included a vampire character, whereas traditional soap fans could still enjoy the usual, non-supernatural characters and storylines featured as the major parts of the show. Caleb and Livvie could be the only vampires, and they could be discreetly satisfying their vampire needs without involving the rest of the characters. After all, when Caleb returned as Stephen Clay on Port Charles’ “Naked Eyes” arc, he managed to pass himself off as a human rock star, drinking special water to quench his eternal thirst.
If Caleb does come back, please do not make him human or try to negate the vampire elements of Port Charles’ past. To do that would ruin his mythic quality, tarnish the character we love. It would be one more insult inflicted on us Port Charles fans who have already seen our cherished show cancelled without even being given a proper send-off, its last few episodes being aired only on SoapNet instead of on ABC. We are left with memories of Port Charles’s greatness, its unique magic, its otherworldly realm of passion and mystery. We still rewatch our Port Charles tapes, discuss our favorite episodes, and are inspired by the emotional impact the series continues to have on our imagination. It is our hope that General Hospital will keep the integrity of the Port Charles characters intact and respect their fans, remaining true to the history of Port Charles and its innovative supernatural storylines.
