Afghanistan: Punish Abusers, Not Victims!

Over 400 women and girls are in Afghanistan prisons for "moral crimes".

"Moral crimes" usually involve a woman or girl running away from domestic violence or forced marriage. Some have been charged with sex outside marriage after being raped or forced into prostitution, which can lead to a 15 year prison term. Women and girls have reported forced and underage marriage, rape, forced prostitution, kidnapping, beatings, stabbings, and many other abuses, yet when they come to the police, they are arrested instead of helped.

None of the abuse cases are even investigated, let alone lead to prosecution and punishment. The abusers -- who are the real criminals -- go free.

Please tell the Afghanistan government to stop treating women like second-class citizens. Laws that force women to suffer through abuse are wrong and cruel. The Afghanistan government should get rid of all "moral crime" laws, and get justice for those that are being punished now. Punish the abusers, not the victims!

Please stop enforcing "moral crime" laws. Instead of punishing the real criminals -- the men that are abusing these women -- the Afghanistan government is putting women and girls into jail for being abused. No longer treat women like second-class citizens, and instead, treat them fairly and get justice for them.
