Children with disabilities should not be ignored! Just because our children cannot speak, does not mean they do not know what is going on. For ten years, we have been asking for better resources for the overcrowded Great Kills High School (Staten Island NY).
The Department of Education is building auditoriums, bigger gyms, and better football fields for abled students. Our gym is the size of a small class room, we do not even have an auditorium, and we do not even have a cafeteria for someone to come in, and cook the food for our children! Instead, we have a satellite type service that puts food in a hot box that is often not hot enough for the kids get to eat.
We need better resources and more space for our overcrowded school! The Department of Ed gave us trailers that are past their expiration. We have 10 children graduating and only 4 can go to the High School We finally got the Capital Expenditure funding to begin the process but, if they do not find a space to move the children now, 6 children will be displaced. We are the only school that has less restrictive learning environment within a self contained school for special needs children. This is discrimation!
