Chicago Public Schools Handled Sexual Abuse Against Kids Poorly

In a breakout report, The Chicago Tribune has exposed that sexual abuse cases are rampant in Chicago Public Schools. One student was raped 40 times by a track coach, another group of students groped by a security officer. The stories are varied and horrific, but one thing is clear: Chicago Public Schools did not do enough to prevent them and needs to do more now to protect students in their care.

The Tribune report found that police had investigated 520 cases of sexual misconduct at Chicago Public Schools between 2007-2017 — that's practically one per week. This is an incredibly high amount of cases where children are being abused in public schools and we can't sit back and accept it. Especially considering about half of those cases were found to include misconduct in the handling of the incidents once they were reported.

The Tribune found at least 72 employees who had been involved in misconduct. "The adults involved included award-winning teachers, lunchroom aides, counselors and coaches, security officers and two deans."

I live in Chicago and I was horrified to see such rampant abuse in our public school systems. Some people didn't even get the requisite background check done, meaning there were known child abusers working with kids. How could this happen? After the Tribune sent their info to Chicago Public Schools, they said they were going to change a bunch of things, but it just doesn't feel like enough.
