At NC State University, Korean Conversation Club (better known as KCC) has been teaching Korean language and culture to interested students for almost ten years. We believe that NC State should include Korean in its language curriculum to support students eager to learn the language and to help spread Korean culture.
We hope that North Carolina State University will establish:
i. A Korean Foreign Language curriculum at North Carolina State University
ii. A Korean Foreign Language Degree Program to North Carolina State University
With your support we can start a conversation with NC State Administration about this program, so please spread the word!
To whom it may concern:
We, on behalf of the Korean Conversation Club at North Carolina State University, are writing to you with the proposal of a new language program. Attached with this letter are the names of supporters of the proposal, as well as the attendance record for Korean Conversation Club meetings.
Korean Conversation Club at North Carolina State University was established in 2007 to provide a means for interested students to learn the Korean language and to discuss Korean culture. Korean Conversation Club meets once a week for an hour and a half, and it provides classes for beginners in an alphabet level all the way through a “free conversation” advanced level. This is made possible thanks to native Korean speakers who volunteer their time to teach. However, Korean Conversation Club has vastly grown in attendance over the years, and it is simply not possible for volunteers, who are relatively inexperienced in teaching, to fully support an average of thirty students each week. Having an average of thirty students each week showing interest in learning Korean demonstrates a need for support from the university to provide professional instruction on the language and culture.
A Korean language program at North Carolina State University would promote the institution as a whole by providing students with more opportunities to expand their knowledge in language studies. North Carolina State University Study Abroad has two direct exchange programs in Korea at Seoul National University and the University of Seoul, and a new Korean language program would help prepare students who choose to study abroad in South Korea.
We hope that North Carolina State University will establish:
A Korean Foreign Language curriculum at North Carolina State University
A Korean Foreign Language Degree Program to North Carolina State University
We believe that the possibility that students who are currently in other Asian foreign language programs at North Carolina State University (Japanese, Mandarin, Urdu, etc.) switching to this new program should not impede or delay the creation of this new language program. Considering the popularity of Korean culture and language that we see on campus today, this new program has the potential to be one of the most successful language programs at North Carolina State University.
Subsequently, Korean Conversation Club would be able to act as a supplement to the new curriculum and provide a comfortable environment where students may apply their new skills. The creation of a Korean Language curriculum would allow Korean Conversation Club to focus more on social and philanthropy aspects of our organization.
We thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Korean Conversation Club Executive Board
