The Red Cross in Australia says 500 jobs will be lost after the Federal Immigration Department slashed funding for the charity's asylum seeker support service.
The charity confirmed 500 of 800 staff working in its migrant support programs around the country will lose their jobs over the next 10 months.
The Red Cross has a long and successful history of assisting thousands of asylum seekers released from detention into the Australian community. The funding cuts will see many skilled and caring staff lose their jobs.
At present more than 2,000 men, women and children rely on the charity to access financial assistance and healthcare.
However, a spokesperson for the Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, said the Government had put in place a new team of service providers to get better value for money, which has meant a change to the allocation to the Red Cross.
This is unacceptable – Red Cross has the experience and compassion to run the program, having done so since 1992.
