I am a student living on campus, paying for my ability to park close to where I sleep. With this ability to park nearby, I believe I should be paying for the safety of myself, and my vehicle. However, on March 22, 2018 around 10am a vehicle was missing from where it was parked last. Thinking the vehicle could still be in the lot, my friend checked the entire zone near Piney Woods for a good 10 minutes before going to UPD. Once a case was created, she asked "Can we check the cameras in the parking lot?" the officer replied, "We don't have any cameras covering any of the parking lots on campus. The only cameras we have that work are facing toward the buildings."
Thus, there are no cameras in most buildings, no cameras watching any parking lots, and no cameras watching the streets, there are no cameras watching the direct safety of our students. Being in a police positive town I expect to feel safe and protected, however, once realizing that if I or a friend were to be kidnapped, or ambushed in the back of the parking lot on our way back from work, there would be no trace of who it was, or really any evidence that it happened at all unless there was a passerby witness.
I want to put an end to vehicular theft on campus, and add more security to our campus for the safety of our students. Please sign this petition if you agree that cameras in our parking lots can benefit you. Thank You!
