There are 168 million children worldwide working in child labor for the production of food, clothing, furniture and electronic products. Many get paid 20 cents per day, working all day. Because the need for income is vital, many of the children don't get days off.
Rather than attend school, they must earn income for their family. Education is the only way for people to get a higher paying job, so most of them work the same low paying job from age 5 until they can no longer work. This low pay is not enough to support a family, which is what causes their children to have to also work.
Buying from reputable companies that don't use child labour is the main way that you can personally impact the ending of child labour. Just a few of the major companies that abuse child labour include H&M, Nestle, Walmart, Victorias Secret, Gap, and Apple. These companies don't admit to child labour, but when allegations of child labour came up in the past, they never denied using it.
Child labour is occuring due to poverty throughout generations and families. This is called the Poverty Cycle. This cycle will never end if changes aren't made. Donating and supporting organizations, such as Save the Children and Me to We can financially help these families who are having to resort to child labour to make enough money.
We need to put pressure on government officials to take appropriate action on businesses that use child labour and to create better education support in countries that need it. Both of these things are reachable if more and more people know about the issue.
