A Police Reform Bill For Accountability Can't Wait!

What happened to George Floyd was inevitable. His death isn’t the first and without that video he would’ve just been another name added to the long list of victims of police brutality and racism. Bringing justice for him isn’t just important for his name, but for the name and honor of those lost to injustice before him. What happened to George Floyd, and not only George Floyd but to Breonna Taylor, Ahamud Arbery, Michael Brown, Eric Garner and so many others is unacceptable, but not unbelievable. We, as the people of this world, owe it to our African brothers and sisters to bring justice so that what happened in the past, won’t repeat in the future. This is why I want to create a petition for a police reform bill for officers to be held accountable for their actions. Racist police officers exist and their beliefs and misgivings, no matter how wrong, might not be changed by us no matter how much we protest, but if fear of not being honorable won’t stop them from attacking or killing African-Americans, then maybe fear of the law will.

What I want to propose is a law where police men and women are held accountable for any actions that they commit. One of the biggest problems in this world is accountability. Police officers are not guaranteed jail time if they kill or severely harm an individual. The law I intend will be a law where if an individual is harmed or hospitalized in police custody, then those officers will or can either be suspended or charged with abuse and assault on the individual. If the person was resisting then there shouldn’t be any need to hospitalize them. If an individual dies in police custody, then that police officer will and can be charged with murder or manslaughter or both. I want people to understand that when white people are being arrested and are resisting, they are never killed or severely harmed. White people are 1.3x more likely to hold a gun than black people yet black people are 3x more likely to be killed by the police despite the earlier statistic.

The same should go for people of all ethnicities, nationalities, and even religion, we are all human at the end of the day. My hope is not that racist police officers will be gone and disappear overnight if this law is put through, but that perhaps a fear of the law will keep police officers in line and prevent misbehavior.
