Demand Hawaiian Language as an Option at all Hawaii's Public High Schools

* PLEASE READ UPDATES AS WELL... Here on Kauai, my daughter is in 2nd year Hawaiian at Kauai High School. She and other Hawaiian students attend Hawaiian in a Spanish class with a Spanish teacher, whom speaks Spanish to them, and can barely pronounce Hawaiian words when they need help. They go online to access the assignment that is sent to them once a week, and they complete it by Sunday night and send back to someone in Hilo. There are no pronounciation, or back an forth hawaiian communication to help these students know if they are saying thing right.

Kauai High School has 3 Spanish teachers, and students questioned Principal Anne Kane when they were going to get a new Hawaiian teacher because they are ALL failing due to not having a proper teacher. They were told that she could not find anyone that she liked. As long as the kumu is qualified, the only other reason for not hiring anyone would be out of discrimination, she told them she will be ending the Hawaiian course next year. There are many Kumu available, I have reached out to a few. After researching, multiple public schools throughout Hawaii are not complying to our constitutional right to be taught our native language.

As of 1978, the State Constitutional Convention, Article X, Section 4 stating that "The state shall provide for a Hawaiian educational program consisting of language, culture, and history in the public schools". We the parents and students of all Hawaii public schools would like to demand to have the Hawaiian language put back in place as aworld language course. We wish to keep our language alive, as throughout Hawaii it is disappearing from our public schools for a second time. At this time Waimea High School is the only public high school on Kauai that is truly complying, they have Hawaiian as a world language for all 4 years of high school, every other school has Spanish and Japanese only.

Please stand up and join us. Don't let our language get compromised once again. Help Hawaii's keiki. Sign our petition to demand DOE, Office of Hawaiian Education, and the State of Hawaii to do all they can to reinstate our language back in ALL Hawaii's Public Schools.

ALOHA, I am ecstatic to inform you all that Kauai High School has hired a Kumu, and might actually be keeping Hawaiian in place there. Please keep pushing this petition as it is for EVERY public high school throughout Hawaii to include Hawaiian Language as a world language course in public high school. We still have Kapaa High School on Kauai to comply...mahalo nui for all of the support for the children of Hawaii.

Aloha Supporters,
Quick update...one of the parents contacted me. Kauai High School would rather kick all of the students out of their Hawaiian class due to failing, than hire a proper Hawaiian language teacher! E kala mai, (pardon me) but not only was he told this by Kauai High School Counselor, but also Hawaii Community College Counselor followed up to insist she be removed from her class. Everyone in DOE claims they didn't know & need to get back to him. He referred them to this petition!

Please share this across all social media!!! With all of your friends and family. You do not need to be a Hawaiian, all you need is to be a real person, and believe that without it's own language a culture will be misunderstood. Lawfully they need to correct this. Help Hawaii's present and future keiki because they have failed past generations. This has been getting attention, let's keep it going.
Mahalo nui loa!
