"Extinction Act" Threatens California's Waterways!

Congress has taken the first step toward gutting the 30-year old Endangered Species Act - America's safety net for fish and wildlife at the edge of extinction - by voting 229 to 193 for legislation that will eliminate the requirement for "critical habitat" for endangered species and make the government pay developers and polluters not to kill publicly owned fish and wildlife.

The landmark Endangered Species Act, signed into law three decades ago by President Nixon, has prevented 99% of all species ever placed under its care from becoming extinct and has helped foster the return of wildlife such as the bald eagle. The Endangered Species Act is even more critical to California's wildlife, like the Golden Trout, where the pressures of development and pollution increasingly threaten survivability.

This dangerous bill can still be stopped in the U.S. Senate. Take action to tell your Senators that you support protection for endangered species.
Dear Senator,

I urge you to reject H.R. 3824, new legislation recently passed by the House that would critically weaken the Endangered Species Act -- and to call on your Senate colleagues to reject this dangerous legislation as well.

Under the guise of "reforming" the Act, Chairman Pombo's bill would set back our efforts to protect threatened species by decades. It would:

* Completely repeal protections for endangered species critical habitat

* Remove protections for species listed as "threatened" under the law

* Allow political appointees -- such as Secretary of Interior Gale Norton -- instead of scientists, to determine what constitutes the best available science

* Exempt federal agencies from the requirement to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on actions that might impact endangered species

* Bankrupt the endangered species program by forcing the Fish and Wildlife Service to pay developers to comply with the law

For all of these reasons, I urge you to oppose H.R. 3824 and to call on your Senate colleagues to do the same.

Sincerely,
