Stand with girls like Zainab, who are working to end Female Genital Mutilation.

Despite Zainab's mother being a former practitioner of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), 17-year-old Zainab refused to be cut and is now an outspoken advocate against the practice.

"For many of us, our parents did not attend school, so they did not know about the dangers of FGM. My mother for example, became a Sowei (the decision makers within these secret societies that practise FGM) when she was very young, so she did not have the chance to get an education, and she did not know that FGM was a bad thing to do."

At just 13, Zainab began advocating against FGM and created an anti-FGM club in her school — she even hosts her own radio show. On her show, Zainab discusses a variety of issues including teenage pregnancy, child marriage, child labour and FGM — to make sure all children are aware of their rights and know how to get help if they need it.

With the support of Plan International, she is also a mentor at her local youth club, and attends events in other districts as well as her own to further raise awareness about the dangers of FGM. Her powers of persuasion were so strong, that even her mother is now a proud advocate against the practice. This is the incredible power and potential of education — Zainab is creating the change she wants to see in the world. Will you stand with her?

Together with you, we can support girls like Zainab who are advocating against Female Genital Mutilation.
