Woman Arrested For Animal Cruelty

A forty-year-old Dona Ana County woman is in jail tonight facing charges of animal cruelty and extreme animal cruelty.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputies say Margarita Moreno neglected to feed her ten pets, resulting in one her dog's deaths.

The dog was discovered by animal control officers after a neighbor alerted police.

The dog was found extremely dehydrated and near death, according to sheriff's deputies.

Deputies also say the dog died only a short time after it was transported to the county animal shelter.

Deputies say the rest of Moreno's pets--a puppy and eight chickens are doing better. They are being housed at the Dona Ana County Animal Shelter.

"Farm animals need shade, I don't care if it's a chicken or a goat or a pig or what it is they need shade, they need water," said Vivian Goodman, Dona Ana County Animal Shelter.

Moreno is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on $20,000 bond
