Urge Conan O'Brien to Help Save Manatees on Hornymanatee.com
Recently, Late Night With Conan OBrien featured a skit about manatees that brought the imperiled animal into the public limelight. During the skit, OBrien drove people to a website www.hornymanatee.com, which has received over 3 million hits.
OBriens featuring of the manatee has thus far been full of fun and jest, but the plight of the manatee is no joke only 3,116 remain in the wild in the United States.
Help us use this publicity to benefit manatees in the wild!
Thank OBrien for bringing the manatee into the spotlight and urge him to give something back to the manatee while millions of viewers enjoy this website. Ask him to include information about the manatees fragile status and information about how visitors can help save them from extinction!
Dear Mr. OBrien,
Thank you for bringing the imperiled manatee into the national spotlight by featuring it on your show, Late Night With Conan OBrien. The accompanying website has garnered the attention of millions of Americans attention this gentle marine animal desperately needs.
I am emailing to ask that you add information on your website about the manatees endangered status and inform visitors how they can help protect the roughly 3,000 manatees remaining in the wild in the United States.
Of critical importance is that the House passage of Representative Richard Pombos (R-CA) bill virtually gutted the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). This bill also included a last minute amendment by Representative Adam Putnam (R-FL) that supports previous efforts by the Florida Marine Contractors Association to exclude the endangered manatee from protections under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
The MMPA extends additional protections beyond the ESA to all marine mammals. This further protection may prove to be critically important to manatees because the marine industries and boating rights groups seek to take the manatee's imperiled status away, both at the state and federal levels.
Viewers can contact their senators to oppose this amendment and the bill gutting the ESA.
Thank you for your consideration,
