Our Wildlife Depends on a Strong Climate Bill

Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. This historic legislation takes the first vital steps to address climate change and help our vanishing polar bears and other species whose existence in the wild is threatened by climate change.

But now the debate moves to the Senate, and the fight is far from finished. While the bill provides a promising first step, we need the Senate to pass and strengthen comprehensive legislation that will safeguard America's ecosystems, wildlife and natural resources.

We can't win for our polar bears and other wildlife without your help. Please send a message today urging your Senators to support strong legislation to fight global warming and help wildlife survive.

Dear Senator [Last Name],

As you know, the House passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454). This bill provides a promising first step towards reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change while working to safeguard natural resources and wildlife threatened by the changes already set in motion. But more needs to be done.

As the Senate begins working on this critical issue, your leadership is needed to help increase the funding necessary to safeguard America's ecosystems, wildlife and natural resources, and to enact the strongest climate and energy bill possible as soon as possible.

The White House recently released a report entitled "Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States" which sends a clear message of just how much work needs to be done. The report details the many ways global warming is changing, shrinking, and destroying habitat, forcing wildlife to migrate or adapt, or threatening their very existence.

Safeguarding wildlife and natural resources protects both human communities and the foundation of a healthy economy. For example, outdoor recreation industries are a $730-billion-a-year industry in the United States. By investing in safeguarding and restoring ecosystems, this legislation will save existing jobs and create new ones to fuel a greener economy.

Global warming is one of the greatest and most urgent challenges we face today. Fortunately there is something you can do about it. I urge you to help ensure that the Senate passes comprehensive climate and energy legislation that includes 5% in dedicated funding from the total allowance value in order to safeguard the natural resources on which we all rely.
