Demand Diversity & Inclusion in the Digital Economy

We live in an era of pervasive technology—it impacts so much of our daily lives, and yet the black community is largely left out when it comes to opportunities in the digital economy.

Only a tiny fraction of employees at tech firms and corporations are African American. At industry giants Twitter, Google, and Facebook combined, the black employment rate is abominably low: just 1.8%.

At the National Urban League (NUL), our new Digital Inclusion Index further raises the red flag of digital exclusion: we found that fewer than 5% of employees at tech companies nationwide are black.

This digital age is no longer new, but it offers new potential for Black Americans—if our government and corporate sector step up to seriously focus on key issues, including minority ownership of tech businesses, workforce hiring, placing minority talent in management positions, and ensuring increased racial and gender representation within the biggest and most influential tech companies.

We need to raise our voices today to demand equality in the digital era. We must ensure that Black Americans have critical seats at the tech table, as leaders and employees in the industry.

By signing today, you are standing with the National Urban League to advocate for more tech-oriented programming, workforce training, and business incubation—and to put the pressure on our tech giants to do much more to promote racial equality in the field.

Sign today for a more digitally inclusive future.
