Lowering the Minimum Legal Drinking Age from 21 to 18

Lower the drinking age from 21 to 18!
Is the drinking age punishing the young adults in America? It is depriving them from being a ‘full’ adult for another three years. But. They can go to war, right? They can vote, right? They can serve on a jury, right? However, they can’t drink alcohol…

Several years ago the entire United States went through a rough time with the Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) laws and regulations. There were many concerns that the MLDA was too low and it should be raised to the age of 21. A poll was conducted at MisterPoll.com and as of January 23, 2006, out of 3,533 votes, 87% wanted to have the MLDA lowered to 18 and 10% wanted to have the MDLA kept at 21 while 3% were undecided. There is the ‘forbidden fruit’ idea that effects everyone in life. We want something that we can’t have. When young adults would like to drink, they realize that they do not have that privilege. Therefore, they go out and drink anyway. If the MLDA were lowered to 18 years of age, young adults would not have to go away secretly and drink. Everyone from the age of 18 could drink in public, responsibly.

A good majority of people think that 18-year-olds only want to drink and get drunk for fun, not accepting any responsibility in the matter. However, look at this logically. Would you rather have an 18-year-old young adult handle a beer or an AK-47? Granted the men and women in the military can consume alcohol on the military bases, when they come back home, what are they to do? Many people use alcohol to calm them and take their mind off the stresses of war, but… coming home is going to be a lot more challenging considering the fact they can’t have any alcohol.

Everyone else in America needs to help support the younger adults. On college campuses, the administration needs to monitor the amount of alcohol being consumed. To a good portion of people that sounds like too much work to monitor young adults in college drinking alcohol. However, why can a bartender keep track of the amount of alcohol a man or woman has had? Not only that, but if a bartender doesn’t mind keeping track of a 45-year-old’s alcohol consumption, why not a young adult in college? Just because the man is 45 and is of legal drinking age does not justify him getting drunk. Somehow, the government does not say anything to the people of legal drinking age about getting drunk or being irresponsible.

Lowering the MLDA will reduce a lot of problems. Colleges can keep students on campus, preventing DUI’s. They can monitor their intake and prevent sickness/death. This plan would save lives! If the MLDA were 18, people would not have to hide in basements and go to exclusive parties to have alcohol! Go drink in public. In order to show responsibility, the young adults have to be given the chance to prove themselves. Years ago the correct measures were not taken (security, monitoring, etc…) and without those measures in place, the young adults struggled and failed. With these new strategies in place, lowering the MLDA would be a wise decision.

Random fact: Did you know that in 1998, 84 of the 535 U.S. Congress Members were stopped for drunk driving? That is 15%! **Source = Kallahar's Place: Quotes http://quickwired.com/kallahar/quotes.php **
