Know Your Credit Score

Consumers won the right to a free copy of their credit reports nearly a decade ago by bombarding Congress with hundreds of thousands of messages.

Now, it's time you have the right to a free credit score!

Your credit score is incredibly important to your financial future. Each of us is assigned a score by credit reporting companies based on our credit reports. That score can determine whether you can buy a home, the interest rates on your credit cards, or what your car insurance will cost.

Right now, you can get a free credit report from a trusted website, AnnualCreditReport.com, to help you track your finances and spot problems you might not know exist. But you typically can't get your score for free. You might pay fees, hand over your credit card for sketchy "trial offers," or buy credit scores that some lenders may not even use.

Consumers deserve trusty and credible free credit scores. Let your leaders know you want to Know Your Score!
Dear [Decision Maker],

In this economy, it is more important than ever for me to take charge of my financial future. That's why I urge you to take whatever action is needed to make sure my credit score is included free-of-charge in my annual credit report. This small change will make a huge difference in the lives of countless Americans during these tough economic times.

Right now, I can get a free copy of my credit report, thanks to the 2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, but if I want my credit score, I may wind up paying fees, handing over my credit card for sketchy "trial offers," and buying scores that some lenders may not even use.

Lenders, banks, and other companies can look at my credit score to make big decisions about me. A higher score can determine whether I'm approved for a loan, and what kind of interest rates I pay.

A credit score is a critical tool for me to have when I'm making decisions about my finances. By making this score free-of-charge with my credit report, I can make the right choices to improve my score, and build a better financial future for myself and my family.

Please take whatever action is necessary to include free credit scores in my credit report, and to make sure that this is the same kind of credible score that lenders see. This is a simple, common-sense measure that will do so much to improve consumers' financial future.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]
