Low-Income Californians Need Better Access to Healthy Food

Despite the research showing obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease on the rise due in large part to our poor diets – there are still many people in the state of California that don't have access to healthy food.

A study in Los Angeles County showed that middle-class and upper-class communities had 2.3 times more supermarkets per capita than low-income communities. Minorities, who are more likely to live in low-income areas than whites, are disproportionately at risk for the health consequences linked with poor diet.

How can people in low-income communities eat heathily if they don't have access to things like fresh fruits and vegetables?

Now, a bill (SB 1329) has been proposed in California to combat this disparity. If passed, this legislation would create a statewide program providing loans and grants in order to:
  • Establish grocery stores in low-income communities;
  • Revitalize existing markets, particularly small corner stores in low-income communities; and
  • Establish and enhance farmers' markets in low-income communities.

To combat the rise of diseases like obesity and diabetes, we must start by ensuring everyone has access to healthy, fresh food. Sign this petition to give all Californians an equal chance at healthy living.

Dear Decision Maker,

Many groups in California, such as seniors and low-income families, struggle with poor access to healthy, affordable, high quality food. If we hope to address problems such as diabetes and obesity, we need to assure that Californians have better access to healthy items, like fruits and vegetables.

The food access problem is complex and each community needs a unique solution. SB 1329 seeks to designate funds for the establishment and/or refurbishment of grocery stores, small markets and farmers markets will give communities the flexibility to find the solution that works best for their unique needs.

SB 1329 is an important step in increasing access to healthy food. By encouraging full service grocery retailers to operate in underserved areas, this bill will promote both health and economic vitality. I urge you to support this important piece of legislation.
