We, the undersigned, request that the City Commission listens to its Staff, the Civic Association and Citizens and approves the "Gardenia Park" Development

This petition requests the rezoning of 5 acres of undeveloped and underutilized land to allow the construction of 46 new town homes in a development to be named Gardenia Park.

DR Horton, is the largest builder in the USA and has a vision for the rezoning of 5 acres of vacant land at 501 NW 17 Street in South Middle River (SMR) which would enable the construction of 46 new town homes each to be sold for $300,000–$350,000.

Gardenia Park will be the first major development in SMR for 30 years which will in turn increase tax revenues for the City and would help the SMR budget that consumes more in tax dollars than it generates.

It is obvious that new home owners in SMR will reinvigorate this neighborhood which, in spite of its proximity to Downtown Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, has one of the highest crime rates in the city.

If successful this development will herald the development of another 5 acre abandoned site on NE17 Street and Andrews Avenue.

We know what we are doing. As the neighborhood's largest landlord we know what we can do for SMR and our City as all of our interests are allied.

The Civic Association and City staff know this is right because both voted in favor of the proposal, but the City's Planning and Zoning board voted 4-3 against the project. We respectfully request that the City Commission recognize that this decision was a mistake and ask that it is corrected so that SMR can truly play its part in creating a better brighter future for Fort Lauderdale. Please approve Gardenia Park!
