Trudeau: Don't expropriate reserve lands

Smooth-talking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau broke his promises and caved to the oil lobby when he approved Kinder Morgan’s Texas tanker expansion last November.

But to actually get this pipeline built, Trudeau will have to sign orders to seize First Nations reserve lands along the pipeline route. This move is so extreme that no Prime Minister has dared to use this power in decades.

The Trans Mountain right-of-way cuts a 60-metre wide strip all across B.C., through reserve communities and suburban neighbourhoods. For construction to go forward, Kinder Morgan would literally have to bulldoze homes and kick people off their land.

With Kinder Morgan eager to start building in September, Trudeau and his cabinet face a crucial decision now. How far is he willing to go to get this Texas tanker project built?

This is our last chance to convince Trudeau to do the right thing. Send a message to the Prime Minister and your Member of Parliament now.
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau (cc: my Member of Parliament),

As a Canadian and as a voter, I was disappointed to see your government approve Kinder Morgan’s pipeline and tanker project last November -- blatantly disregarding your promises to re-do the NEB review and to respect the rights of First Nations.

But as Kinder Morgan prepares to start construction this year, you face a new decision. Will you sign orders to expropriate reserve land from First Nations without their consent? Will you allow Kinder Morgan to bulldoze homes and kick British Columbians off their land along the pipeline route?

I urge you to rethink your support of this Texas company’s pipeline project. You have said yourself that “governments grant permits, communities grant permission.” Forcing Kinder Morgan’s expansion through without consent or social licence is not nation-building. And it could be a ballot-box issue across the country in 2019.

Sincerely,
