Even as he trumpets his disingenuous claim of "no collusion," President Trump continues to endanger U.S. interests and the standing of the free world by cozying up to murderous Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
The president has defended the Putin regime against evidence compiled by our own intelligence community, defied his own advisors' pleas to "not congratulate," and driven a wedge between America and its staunchest allies to appease the former Soviet spy.
And, it seems, he's just getting started.
Trump, without consultation of the intelligence or diplomatic communities, has extended an invitation to Putin to visit Washington and the White House this fall. The visit would validate the tyrant's brutal tactics as well as his well-documented attack on American democracy through the 2016 elections, and it is imperative that Congress stop it from taking place.
This is not a question of partisan politics, this is an urgent matter of stopping a clear and present danger to American security, U.S. interests, and the democratic values we claim to hold dear. For two years, our nation has argued over whether Trump colluded with the Russian regime. That debate has ended as we watch the collusion take place before our very eyes.
Congress can and must stop Trump from doing any further damage to our national interests through his unholy alliance with Vladimir Putin.
We, the undersigned, call on our elected representatives in Washington to immediately pass a bill that would stop Trump from giving Putin the honor of presidential welcome in our nation's Capitol.
