Charge Killers of 200,000 Honey Bees with Felony Animal Cruelty

Every winter, honey bees that are leased to California's almond farmers to pollinate their trees are moved from their home in the state's chilly Central Valley to Prunedale, a coastal town where the weather is warmer.

But hundreds of thousands of those bees didn't survive the winter this year – and it wasn't because of the cold. On the night of January 13, a vandal or vandals trespassed onto the property, knocked over 100 hives and then cruelly sprayed them with diesel fuel. About 200,000 honey bees were killed.

Just two weeks prior to this horrible mass killing, half a million honey bees were killed by two boys who knocked down all the hives belonging to a honey business in Sioux City, Iowa. The 12-year-old and 13-year-old have been charged with the felonies of criminal mischief, agricultural animal facilities offenses and burglary.

No arrests have been made yet in California. When the killer (or killers) of the 200,000 honey bees is caught, they should be charged with the same felony crimes as the Iowa boys, and should also be charged with felony animal cruelty for dousing the bees with gasoline.

Please sign and share this petition urging the Monterey County Sheriff's Office to prosecute the bee killer(s) to the full extent of the law.
