Tell the Senate: Ban Assault Weapons Now

Assault weapons are devastating communities and making mass shootings deadlier than ever. America is on track for a record year of mass shootings in 2023 and our leaders in Congress must do everything in their power to protect our communities from these deadly weapons of war.

Take action and tell your Senators to fight for our safety and pass The Assault Weapons Ban of 2023.
I am writing to urge the Senate to prioritize passing an assault weapons ban. Last year, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act proved that gun violence prevention was a winning issue for members of both political parties. In fact, a recent Fox News poll even found that 61% of Americans support an assault weapons ban. President Biden himself has urged the Senate to "try like the devil" to ban assault weapons – and we demand action.

America is on track for a record year of mass shootings and mass killings in 2023. As gun violence continues to devastate communities across the country, I am asking you to prioritize the safety of your constituents and push for a vote on S.25 - The Assault Weapons Ban of 2023.

Assault weapons make mass shootings deadlier. The Violence Project recently looked at mass shootings that took place in public spaces and left four or more people dead. Their study found that while assault weapons were only used in 34% of the mass shootings of the 2010s, they were responsible for 56% of the deaths. It's no coincidence that ten of the seventeen deadliest mass shootings since 2012 have involved AR-15s. Researchers estimate that if we banned access to such firepower, our nation would experience 70 percent fewer mass shooting deaths.

While a bullet from a regular handgun lacerates an organ, a round from an AR-15 style weapon shreds it, often proving fatal. According to the medical examiner who testified at the Parkland trial, the killer purposely chose the Smith & Wesson AR-15 because of its high-capacity magazines and ability to "kill effectively." The weapon empowered the murderer to fire 39 rounds as quickly as he could pull the trigger, creating small entrance wounds in his victims but practically liquifying organs and causing extensive bodily damage.

The local pediatrician who rushed to Uvalde Memorial Hospital after the massacre of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Texas testified during a congressional hearing on gun violence and shared that children were "pulverized" and "decapitated" by AR-15 bullets. Tragically, DNA samples were required to identify the victims of the Uvalde shooting.

As your constituent, I implore you to take action and help find a pathway for banning assault weapons as soon as possible. It should be a legislative priority to pursue every available avenue to get these deadly weapons of war off of our streets.
