Oppose Legislation Enabling Mass Murdering of Cats

  • by: Care2

The "P" in the REPAIR Act now before the Senate stands for "Protection," yet this bill does the opposite of protecting. It authorizes the killing of free roaming cats and dogs, wild horses, and any other animals unfairly deemed "invasive."

Killing programs, using federal money and under few federal restrictions, would exterminate virtually any feral cat found in the wild. In the past these programs have used painful poisons, body-gripping traps, snares and other cruel procedures to kill animals.

Congress should instead support more humane programs like Trap-Neuter-Return ones that avoid taking animal life. It doesn't have to and shouldn't allow indiscriminate murdering of innocent domestic cats and other animals. Sign the petition to tell your Senator to say "No" to cruel mass killing of feral animals.

Dear Senator,

I urge you to oppose HR 767, or the Refuge Ecology Protection, Assistance, and Immediate Response Act. It in fact does the opposite of what its title implies: it authorizes the mass killing of animals, mainly free roaming, or feral, domestic cats.

This bill is meant to address the issue of "nonnative" domestic cats that are entering the wild and eating animals such as fish and birds. However, in order to "protect" the fish and birds from cats, this legislation would fund indiscriminate killing of innocent cats and other animals deemed "invasive." In addition to being inhumane to the animals called "invasive," HR 767 would not even help these animals' prey.

This legislation would provide far too much wiggle room in its definition of "invasive species" and its restrictions on how people can "control" these animals. Such broad wording could lead many animals to face, at the hands of unrestricted people, harrowing killing procedures, which in the past included painful poisons, body-gripping traps, snares and other cruel methods. Proper legislation would protect animals from large-scale, cruel murdering. Please oppose HR 767, or the REPAIR Act, in order to save innocent cats and other animals from mass, inhumane killing programs.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
