Demand Justice for the Endangered Black Panther and Other Protected Animals in a Wildlife Sanctuary!

Officials say the head of one of Thailand's largest construction companies has been arrested for hunting endangered and protected animals in the Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary-the UNESCO World's Heritage Site- and was found with the skin of a black panther and other animals.

Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation announced that Premchai Karnasuta was arrested Sunday with three others after park officials were informed they had set up camp in a restricted wildlife sanctuary on Thailand's western border.

Premchai is president of Italian-Thai Development.

Tuesday's statement said national park rangers found guns and the carcasses of a black panther, a Kalij pheasant and a barking deer in their possession. The Rangers filed charges of hunting protected animals and violating gun laws.

Police said Premchai has denied the charges.

The police officers have moved slowly on this case, showing the lack of transparency in the area, If the case goes to court, it would already be a "triumph," but many illegal poaching cases don't make it that far.

We must put pressure on this case, especially since money talks, so that the case can eventually go to court!

There are approximately only 26 Black Panthers left in Thailand. Now, one was down.

Update #56 years ago
The police decided not to charge Premchai with the Animal Cruelty. They will also drop the charge of illegal possesion of African Elephant tusks. They claimed that the tusks were registeted in his wife's name. It's illegal to possess any African Elephant tusks in Thailand, then why could those be registeted? They will not charge him with bribery but the park rangers got a voice record of Premchai's driver attempted to bribe the park rangers.

The forensic expert and former assistant national police chief said on Thursday that he was confident the evidence against the suspects in the case was solid.

Police found five registered long-barrel guns and four elephant tusks in Premchai Karnasuta's residential compound in Bangkok Wednesday.

Premchai and the others have been granted bail with a bond of 150,000 baht each. They denied the charges.

Prime Minister said no one can help Mr. Premchai if he is proven to be guilty as charged.
