As I cycle to and from work I am aware of the constant ribbon of detritus that lies on our roadsides. The other day I litter picked a quarter mile stretch of B road and picked up 12 black sacks of rubbish. Not only is it an eyesore, but, as most of us know, it amounts to a tremendous ecological threat, and it’s getting worse. If the litter is not picked up then natural processes will work down through the soil, where it will remain hidden for thousands of years. I believe it is our social, environmental and moral duty to get out there and fight this problem, a problem which highlights a fundamental lack of environmental consideration in our society.
In an attempt to tackle this i've created the following petitoion; one that asks councils around the UK to organise litter pick-ups that would be carried out by volunteers. I'd like to see the details of each campaign (location, time etc...) broadcast on regional/national media platforms in order to reach the size of audience required.
The petition is as follows:
For the creation of a nationwide, government-run, voluntary litter clean-up scheme, where publicly funded bodies are made responsible for planning, organising and implementing litter pick-ups. The pick-ups would utilise volunteers and would be organised and controlled by the authority responsible for the area being cleaned on any particular campaign.
Please only sign if you reside in the UK.
If this gets passed I truly believe we can turn this ugly situation around, and in doing so encourage those around us, especially the future generations, to take better care of our environment.
As a nation we marvel at the beauty of our country; let's clean it up.
