The Supreme Court of the U.S. just sided against queer youths, and with adults who try to "convert" them out of their queerness. In a recent verdict, it ruled that the state of Colorado may have broken the law by protecting LGBTQ+ people, specifically referring to a Colorado law banning dangerous "conversion therapy."
Conversion therapy is not real therapy. It is abusive, brainwashing, and all about control. States absolutely should have the right to ban LGBTQ+ discrimination and cruelty towards queer children.

But conversion therapy does not protect freedom of speech or freedom of expression.
Conversion therapy's whole premise is that it attempts to convert a person's authentic gender identity or sexual orientation to make them become more "traditional." This is a violation of queer people's freedom of expression!
Sending a gay or trans child to conversion therapy is just a way to tell that child they are unlovable or unacceptable as they are. It's a way to tell them they must hide their true selves in order to be worthy of connection. And it's fundamentally devastating to their mental health - which can quickly escalate to dangerous situations.

The research is clear: conversion therapy isn't effective at "changing" people to become more straight or less trans. Meanwhile, it is very effective at leading to depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and suicidality. As a result, nearly every important medical association in the U.S. has condemned conversion therapy.
Children ought to be treated with love, acceptance, and support. Not shamed and told they need to be "fixed." There is nothing wrong with being gay, lesbian, bi, queer, non-binary, or trans. The idea that anyone would try to convince a child they're wrong just for being themselves, and try to "convert" them into a depression-filled life of lies is sickening.
Luckily, governments are pushing back. The U.K. is considering a nationwide ban on conversion therapy. And around half of all states in the U.S. have banned the disgusting, abusive, unscientific practice of "conversion therapy."
