For many of us, spending more time at home throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been the safest way to protect ourselves and others. For those surviving every day with a domestic abuser, staying home to stop the spread can come with a different kind of threat - for themselves and their pets.

According to research, as many as 71% of pet-owning women entering domestic violence shelters report their abuser injured, killed, or threatened family pets for revenge or psychological control.

Because many domestic violence shelters do not currently have the ability to house pets, survivors are faced with an incredibly difficult choice: abandon their pet or continue to face abuse at home.

No one should have to make that decision.

In 2022, just 15% of domestic violence shelters in the United States are able to accomodate pets on-site, up from 10% since 2012. This unmet need presents a crippling barrier for survivors seeking safety with their pets.

Even though they are putting their own lives at risk, up to 48% of survivors delay leaving because they fear for their pet's safety if forced to leave them behind.

That's why RedRover is working to ensure that at least 25% of domestic violence shelters in the United States are able to welcome survivors and their pets by the end of 2025. We need caring and compassionate people like you to help us spread the word.

Sign to join RedRover's efforts to increase the number of pet-friendly domestic violence shelters in the United States to 25% by 2025, and give more survivors and their pets the peace and healing they deserve.
