Don't Let Corporate Polluters Poison Us. Protect Oregonians From Dirty Diesel Pollution!

By the time you smell diesel, it's already in your lungs.

Oregonians urgently need better protections against dirty diesel emissions. But right now, corporate polluters are winning and our state legislators are letting them get away with it. Meanwhile, people are fighting to breathe – this shouldn't be a political fight!

Diesel emissions are at unhealthy levels in at least 23 Oregon counties, increasing the chances of asthma attacks, lung damage, heart attacks, strokes, and infertility. Yet diesel pollution is a fixable problem – new diesel engines can run 95% cleaner than older engines!

States like California have already passed smart regulations requiring cleaner diesel. We're being left behind in the smog as dirty engines seep over our state's borders. And the impacts are hitting hardest on low-income communities and communities of color.

While the 2017 legislative session has ended, we still need to raise our voices to make it clear to our legislators that they can't just walk away leaving unfinished business that affects people's lives and health. This is an equity and health issue.

Together, we must demand that our legislators commit to using the 2018 legislative session to pass legislation that goes further in protecting the health of Oregonians by setting pollution standards for off-road diesel engines and on-road diesel fleets.

Sign the petition today and tell your legislators not to waste any more time. Oregon must make a plan to require newer diesel engines.
Subject: Pass stronger legislation to combat diesel pollution

Dear legislator,

I urge you in the 2018 legislative session to pass legislation that goes further in protecting the health of Oregonians by setting pollution standards for off-road diesel engines and on-road diesel fleets.

We cannot continue to allow the dumping of dirty out-of-state diesel engines into Oregon. They are a threat to health and public safety and we need to accelerate the cleanup of diesel in our state.

As you know, you passed SB 1008 in the 2017 session, which uses some of the Volkswagen settlement money for repowering, retrofitting, and replacing. This is a great start to addressing our diesel emissions, but it does not do enough.

We have a unique opportunity to use the remaining Volkswagen settlement funds to set pollution standards and provide incentives for retrofitting and replacing dirty diesel engines. I stand with thousands of Oregonians when I urge you to take the 2018 session to finish what you started with diesel, and protect the lungs of future generations.
