Thank Virgin Atlantic Airlines for Dumping Unsustainable Food

Virgin Atlantic is taking action to remove unsustainable food items from its in-flight menu. The airline, founded by Sir Richard Branson, announced that it will remove beef, palm oil and soy from all flights from North America, the UK, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

In particular, menus from Caribbean-bound flights now use rapeseed oil rather than palm oil. This change alone will avoid the use of 100 tons of palm oil per year.

Beef, soy and palm oil are not considered sustainable because their production contributes to deforestation. In fact, they are three of the four primary drivers of tropical deforestation, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Let us thank Virgin Atlantic for setting a good example by taking a big step towards helping save our planet's fragile ecology.
