Nasa does some of the best climate research in the world and that is exactly why Trump has nominated a climate denier to lead it. Jim Bridenstine’s nomination to lead the world’s premier organization that studies space, the Earth and it’s atmosphere is just another threat to those of us that believe government organizations like Nasa play a crucial role in promoting science and knowledge.
The Oklahoma Congressman would be the first politician to lead the agency that usually puts astronauts and and scientists at its head. And he has pledged to end the agency’s climate research.
Bridenstine is just another example of Trump’s propensity to hire wholly unqualified or unworthy people to lead agencies that create and carry out policy on important health or environmental issues. He made a mockery of the EPA by putting Scott Pruitt - a man thoroughly on the side of of some of America’s largest polluters. He insulted our intelligence when he put Rick Perry in charge of the Department of Energy - as candidate for president he vowed to disband the agency altogether. And Trump’s choice for Secretary of the Interior has basically put a bullseye on some of the country’s most cherished lands.
We have already seen the damage done by Trump’s pro-business, anti-environment henchmen. Everything from a rollback of clean air and water policy to proposed drilling within national monuments, anything is on the table.
If we don’t stop his nomination, Bridenstine will be one more agent working to reverse the climate and environmental progress we achieved under Obama. And while we might not feel the consequences, our children surely will.
