Tell Congress to Support Renewable Energy and Healthier Communities

The need has never been greater to pivot to a green economy in order to avert the catastrophic effects of climate change.

Shifting to a clean energy system addresses a number of problems we are battling in our nation, including climate change, air pollution that exacerbates the COVID-19 crisis, and environmental racism, all of which are directly linked to the health and well-being of our communities, in particular communities of color and those that are most vulnerable.

Cancer, asthma and other diseases are linked to the use of fossil fuels. A 2018 report by the NAACP and Clean Air Task Force concluded that nearly 7 million African-Americans live near oil refineries. Those industry operations result in the emission of 9 million tons of pollutants annually, which are accountable for more than 138,000 asthma attacks per year among school-age children.

Congress must end taxpayer subsidies of the fossil fuel industry and provide much-needed support for renewable energy jobs and healthier communities. They can do this by starting with extending the federal wind Production Tax Credit and solar Investment Tax Credit; supporting renewable energy job training programs, especially in our most vulnerable communities; and by showing our government can "lead by example" with installation of clean renewable energy on federal buildings and military bases. But they won't act unless they hear from you.

Together we can improve air quality and save lives. Sign your name and tell Congress to support renewable energy!
Dear Congressmember and Senators,

The need has never been greater to pivot to a green economy to avert the catastrophic effects of climate change. The effort to slow warming will require wide-scale change and transformative action. As you consider the next measures to rebuild our economy from the Covid crisis I urge you to take this opportunity to divert fossil fuel subsidies to the renewable energy sector for the following reasons:

  • Shifting to clean energy addresses a number of problems we are battling in our nation, including climate change, air pollution that exacerbates the Covid crisis, and environmental racism, all of which are directly linked to the health and well-being of our communities, in particular communities of color and low-income.

  • Cancer, asthma and other diseases are linked to the use of fossil fuels and according to a 2018 report by the NAACP and the environmental advocacy nonprofit Clean Air Task Force, nearly 7 million African-Americans live near oil refineries. Those industry operations result in the emission of 9 million tons of pollutants annually, which are accountable for more than 138,000 asthma attacks per year among school-age children.

  • Renewable energy is our fastest growing, higher-wage job sector, supporting over 3 million jobs across the country.

For all of these reasons, I urge you to end taxpayer subsidies of the fossil fuel industry and provide much-needed support for renewable energy jobs and healthier communities. You can start to do this by extending the federal wind Production Tax Credit (PTC) and solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC); supporting renewable energy job training programs, especially in our most vulnerable communities; and by showing our government can "lead by example" with installation of clean renewable energy on federal buildings and military bases.

In short there is no time to waste to transition to an equitable clean energy future that protects the health and well being of all citizens and creates clean sustainable jobs that will enable future generations to live and work in healthy, thriving communities. Please vote to support renewable energy and healthier communities.

Sincerely,
[your name]
