Boycott Future Travel to St. Maarten Until Justice Is Served

This petition demonstrates your support to boycott all tourism to St. Maarten due to their government's insufficient response, investigation, and public disclosure of a recent hate crime committed against two American tourists. Until a sufficient investigation results in the arrest and conviction of the attackers, and effective anti-hate crime legislation is enforced in St. Maarten, this petition calls for the universal boycott of all travel to the island.

On April 6th, 2006, Ryan Smith (25 years old), Richard Jefferson (51 years old), both of New York City, along with several friends were attacked outside a local bar while vacationing in St. Maarten. Jefferson and Smith were subjected to horrific beatings with a four-pronged tire iron; Jefferson suffered several blows to the head and back, and Smith suffered a fractured skull along with other injuries. The long-term neurological damages for Smith can't be determined at this point, but he is certain to face a long recovery.

The authorities were contacted immediately after the attack, but failed to show up to the scene. They have yet to launch a thorough investigation, and despite the presence of many witness, the perpetrators have not yet been apprehended.

We hope you will join us in signing this petition to boycott all future travel to St. Maarten until the investigation leads to the arrest and prosecution of the attackers.
