Getting to 60 mpg is the biggest step we can take to break our $1 billion per day habit of importing foreign oil and end a dependence that threatens our economy, our environment, and our national security.
Not only does the technology to get us there exist today, but a 60 mpg standard would save consumers money at the pump. Today, with gas at $4.00 per gallon, if the fleet of cars and trucks met a 60 mpg standard now the average American family would save $513 at the gas pump this summer. The average consumer would save a net of $8,900 over the life of the vehicle.
Tell the Obama Administration to move clean cars into the fast lane by setting standards that achieve an average fuel efficiency of 60 miles per gallon in 2025.

Dear [Decision Maker],
Recently, the President pledged to reduce our oil imports by one-third by 2025. Setting strong vehicle efficiency and emissions standards is the most effective and common sense step we can take to reduce our dependence on oil.
Strong vehicle efficiency standards of at least 60 miles per gallon in 2025 will significantly reduce our dependence on oil, save consumers money at the pump and use American innovation to make our auto industry compete and thrive in a global marketplace. The difference between the weakest and strongest standards you are considering is a net savings of $370 billion at the pump through 2030 and keeping twice as much global warming pollution out of the atmosphere.
From improvements in conventional engines to advanced technology vehicles like hybrid and electric vehicles, automakers already have the technology to achieve a 60 mpg standard by 2025.
It is time to move clean cars into the fast lane by cutting emissions by 6% per year and setting standards that require new cars and light trucks to average 60 miles per gallon by 2025. Don't lose this opportunity to cut our addiction to oil, keep billions in our economy and curb global warming.
