Cut Climate Pollution to Protect Birds and People

Climate change is the biggest threat to birds and people. Birds are telling us that their survival—and ours—depends on healthy natural spaces and a rapid transition to clean energy in order to curb the effects of climate change.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a new plan to reduce carbon emissions from coal and natural gas power plants—the country's second-largest source of climate pollution.

Send a comment to the EPA today in support of strong climate pollution standards to slow the rise in global temperatures and create a healthier environment for people and birds. The deadline to send comments is August 8.

Note: Your comment will be sent directly to the EPA and will become part of the public record.
To Administrator Regan:

I am writing to express my strong support for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposed standards to cut climate pollution from coal- and natural gas-fired power plants. Audubon scientists found that climate change is the biggest threat to birds and people alike, with two-thirds of North American bird species at risk of extinction due to our warming planet. The EPA's proposal is a critically important step forward to slow global temperature rise and protect birds and people from the effects of climate change. The EPA must also take action to ensure frontline communities are protected from power plant pollution, through rigorous pollution monitoring and enforcement, and meaningful ongoing engagement by community partners and stakeholders.

As we know, fossil fuel-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of carbon pollution driving climate change. Climate change leads to poor air quality, further exacerbating negative health outcomes like respiratory disease, heart disease, and other illnesses caused by toxic air pollution from power plants and other sources. Climate change is also driving more frequent and intense extreme weather events. From hurricanes and heat waves to wildfires and flooding, communities across the country are experiencing the impacts of the climate crisis firsthand.

Birds tell us it is not too late, but there is no time to lose. By acting now, the EPA can help protect our most vulnerable birds and create healthier communities. Our climate can't wait!

Sincerely,
