Tell DHS to Stop Using US Coast Guard Ships as Floating Black Site Prisons!

Under Trump, Ret. Gen. John Kelly briefly headed up the Department of Homeland Security.

It has recently come to light that Kelly instructed the U.S. Coast Guard to begin aggressively detaining suspected drug smugglers in Central America. Many of these people were taken aboard Coast Guard ships which then dropped anchor in international waters in the Pacific Ocean. There, detainees have been held for as long as 90 days.

These people are frequently chained to the ships' decks, where they are left exposed to the elements. Because facilities do not exist to accommodate long-term detainees, they are often given buckets to use as bathrooms.

This practice is not only a violation of human and civil rights, it is simply cruel and inhumane. It must be ended.

Currently, Elaine Duke is serving as the acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. She has the authority to make important changes within the Coast Guard.
