Discontinue the Allowance of Pedestrians Stopping Vehicle Traffic at Crosswalks Without Traffic Lights

These crosswalk areas are popping up all over the state, and especially so in Traverse City. The downtown area is LITTERED with signs that say "must stop for pedestrian crossing". This is beyond dangerous because it has encouraged pedestrians to not look before crossing the road and walking or running in front of moving cars that have almost no time to react. The signs are located in the middle of the road and unless you know what they say already they are impossible to decipher at a distance. Pedestrian traffic should NEVER stop vehicle traffic unless there is a light that can safely stop traffic and guide pedestrians across safely and at specific times. I have brought this to the attention of the city and the county and both have laughed it off. This is can cause death or major injury for the pedestrian and jail time and fines for someone just trying to get around safely and not knowing ridiculous "local laws" or loosely defined "state laws".
