More than 100 people die daily from gun violence in America. It doesn't have to be this way. Strengthening our background checks laws by closing loopholes can make our communities safer.
Right now, the Charleston loophole makes it so that if a background check cannot be completed in 3 business days, the buyer can purchase the gun anyway, no questions asked. This assumption allows people barred from buying a gun — like the shooter who shot and killed 9 Black parishioners in Charleston — to obtain firearms and completely circumvent gun safety laws. During the pandemic, surging gun sales have only exacerbated this loophole by overwhelming the background checks system.
Without swift changes to our nation's laws, the gun violence crisis could get even deadlier. With Gun Sense Majorities in both chambers of Congress and a Gun Sense Champion in the White House, now is the time to act! Earlier this year, the House passed bipartisan legislation to address the Charleston loophole, and now the Senate must act.
