Integrity In Recruiting

The purpose of this petition is to prevent deceptive recruiting practices by college coaches when they are recruiting student athletes for college scholarships. Young teenage high school student athletes and their families have been deceived and defrauded by many coach's intentional and well calculated recruiting scams which convince student athletes to enroll in the coach's institution with a verbal promise of a scholarship, and not pursue other college scholarship opportunities, and eventually the coach pulls a bait and switch scheme that leaves the young student athlete without a scholarship at the intended college or at any other college. Many times the institution stands behind the deceptive coach for legal reasons. Fair and equitable recruiting is the goal.
A new Bylaw for the NCAA: When contacting a student athlete as a potential recruit, in person, by telephone, by fax, by E-Mail or by written letter, a coach and the coach's institution shall, within seven (7) days, notify the student athlete in writing that verbal representations made have no legal standing. The notification in writing shall clearly state that the verbal representations made by the coach and the institution are only "possibilities". The written notification shall also include encouragement by the coach and the institution that the student athlete continue to pursue other potential college opportunities available to the student athlete and advise that until a national letter of intent is offered by the coach and signed by the student athlete, no actual offer of a scholarship exists.
