Homeland Security, There's No Reason to 'Monitor' American Journalists

  • by: Kevin Mathews
  • recipient: Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen

The Department of Homeland Security is currently looking for bids from firms who can maintain a database on hundreds of thousands of journalists (both here and abroad.)

Sign on to ask them not to create this database as it can only be used for bad things!

The database would give the government quick access to each reporters' contact info and professional history, as well as the "sentiment" they express in their reporting.

That's a scary concept coming from an administration that's shown such open contempt for a free press. Since the reasons for such a database are hardly obvious to start, can we really trust Trump won't misuse a monitoring tool that allows him to search for journalists who cover him unfavorably?

Journalists exist to keep the government accountable, not vice-versa. We ask Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to scrap plans for this database before it's misused.
