Mandatory microchip scans at every shelter, rescue, vet clinic, pet store, and groomer would undoubtedly help reunite lost pets with their owners; therefore helping keep the number of pets in Texas shelters down, and most importantly, the number of euthanized pets in Texas shelters down.
Furthermore, if someone's lost (microchipped) pet is found by a dishonest or unknowledgable individual, this person may "flip" the pet for profit or simply keep the pet themselves. This pet would only be scanned at the finder's request. If no one requests a scan, the pet will not be reunited with it's rightful owner, rendering microchipping pets in Texas ineffective.
If we the public are encouraged to microchip our pets, there must be a law that mandates microchip scans. This will reinforce the sense of security of having your pet microchipped, as well as justify the cost and process of pet microchipping.
There's absolutely NO LAW in the state of Texas that requires any shelter, rescue, vet clinic, pet adoption center, or groomer to scan for a microchip unless requested! This means that if you did your part and had your pet microchipped, and suddenly your pet goes missing, you may not get your pet back simply because he or she is microchipped. Some microchipped pets have actually been euthanized, adopted out to new families, kept or rehomed by the finder, flipped for profit, or relocated to another state for adoption.
Texas Animal Laws NEED to change! This will help with the over population of pets in Texas shelters and rescues. It is much more cost effective to scan for a microchip (which is free, quick, and easy) rather than raising money for rescue, foster homes, euthanasia, and even relocation to another state where these pets may face the same horrific fate - euthanasia!
Please sign this petition to demand that the Texas State Senate finally step up and do their part in helping save innocent lives who already have loving homes! We demand mandatory microchip scans at all Texas animal shelters, rescues, vet clinics, pet stores (where ever a pet may be purchased), groomers, and mobile vet clinics to help ensure that each microchipped pet is reunited with their loving family.
