Join with us to tell

the Gaithersburg City Council,
the Montgomery County Board of Education,
Council and County Executive
that we want to keep our park & ballfields
at Kelley Park

Because:

• Kelley Park, built with State and Gaithersburg City funds, is the only multi-use park east of 355;
People from across the region come and use the ball and soccer fields; volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts; children's play equipment; as well as enjoy the opportunity to commune with nature and meet new friends;
• The Park is the home of diverse plants and animals, is a protected wetland and flood plain, and contains a stream that leads to the Chesapeake Bay;
Affected neighborhood communities were NOT involved in the site selection committee for the proposed school, which if built, will negatively affect homeowners' and park users' quality of life, and will decrease property values;
Building the proposed school would cause surrounding neighborhoods to be "book-ended" by a second school that their children cannot may not be able to attend unless the MCPS agrees to change the current boundaries to include the neighborhoods surrounding Kelley Park [clarified May 27, 2018];
• Since the Victory Farm corridor area is already congested, has grossly inadequate parking and sits between two large middle schools, the addition of several hundred more vehicles per day —parents, teachers and busses— will make an already dangerous situation worse;
NO traffic or environmental impact studies were conducted prior to site selection;
• The Board of Education will NOT conduct a boundary study that will determine whether children in the surrounding neighborhoods will be allowed to attend the proposed school until 18 months before the opening of the proposed school and after construction is already underway;
• The Board of Education currently has insufficient funds to build the school.

We ask:

1. That the Gaithersburg City Council  REJECT the Board of Education proposal.

2. That the Board of Education involve surrounding neighborhoods and RECONSIDER other potential sites.

3. That the Montgomery County Council and County Executive WITHHOLD discussion of funding until all preliminary options have been re-visited and the required traffic, environmental impact, and boundary studies have been completed.

Update #62 years ago
Many people of Gaithersburg are unhappy with recent decisions of the Mayor and City Council, including the ES #8 at Kelley Park, senior housing at the Holiday Inn and the Rt 355 WaWa. This November the Mayor and two City Councilpersons are up for reelection. A local group is prepared to support campaigns for opposing candidates who share our values. If you would like to run, or know of a Gaithersburg City resident who would consider running, please contact us at: gburgcandidates@gmail.com

Update #44 years ago
On behalf of the almost 3,000 people who have pledged their support to Save Kelley Park, we have pleaded with senior officials at the State and County level to no avail. Unless stopped, the City is going to give Kelley Park away so that MCPS can build a school that neighborhood children may not be able to attend.
Tell the City Council that they need to change direction.

In combination with the paper petitions we are almost at 1,700 signatures!!!!

Tomorrow the City Manager will present his recommendations on moving forward with negotiations with the Montgomery County Public Schools regarding the siting of the new elementary school. Please SHOW YOUR SUPPORT. Turn out in person (wearing green) at City Hall at 7:00 p.m to tell the Council that you want to SAVE KELLEY PARK.

It promises to be crowded-get there early and bring a 8 1/2" x ll" sign.
