Call on your local MP to support a #greenrecovery in Canada today!

Now's our chance to invest in a green recovery. The federal government is about to give the Canadian economy a multi-billion-dollar kick-start in an effort to recover from the COVID-19 health crisis.

Everyone must remind their MP that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to invest in a green recovery and put Canada on a sustainable path to a safer, healthier future.

Finally, remind them that recovery spending must be grounded in law, such as a climate accountability framework that requires the federal government to set, then meet, emissions reduction targets that will get Canada to net-zero by 2050.

During this pandemic, Canada has committed nearly 10 times the G20 average, per capita, to fossil fuel corporations. This cannot continue.

Our elected officials have a choice. Lock in the status quo, accelerate climate change, and line the pockets of oil and gas executives and shareholders — or invest in a green recovery to shift Canada towards a stronger and more equitable and sustainable society.

Make sure they know where you stand. Tell your MP: Those funds must be invested in sustainable jobs and emissions reductions that get Canada to net-zero, not prop up the failing oil and gas industry.
Subject:  Invest in a green recovery for Canada

Dear [recipient name will go here],

As you and your fellow MP's look to stimulate Canada's economy following the COVID-19 lockdown, I am asking you to support a green recovery.

Throughout the pandemic, the federal government has continued to fund a failing fossil fuel industry – at a scale that is ten times greater than that of any other G20 country. The federal government has committed to exceed Canada's 2030 emissions goal and to set the country on a path to net-zero emissions by 2050, but we will not hit these targets if the federal government continues to prop-up emission-heavy industries.

A green recovery is an opportunity to put Canada on a more sustainable, equitable path and stimulate the economy and create jobs. A green recovery for Canada means investing in:

- A just transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy
- The protection and restoration of land, freshwater, and ocean ecosystems along with the wildlife that call these places home
- An end to the use of single-use plastics, and the growth of a circular economy
- The replacement of toxic chemicals used in agricultural, consumer goods and manufacturing with safer alternatives
- The development of accessible, affordable and healthy communities and transportation networks
- A future that prioritizes social and racial justice, economic equity, and well-being, built in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and the communities most exposed to environmental harm

Recovery spending that triggers an uptick in climate change-causing emissions will only compound existing inequity and strife. This is why recovery spending must also be grounded in law, such as the climate accountability framework proposed by Ecojustice and its partners. You can learn more about this framework here: https://bit.ly/34ikX27

Canadians demand a new way forward. I want a future that is better than normal, for myself, my family, and my community — and I hope that's something you'll fight for on my behalf.

Please support a green recovery that puts Canada on a sustainable path to a safer, healthier future.

Kind regards,
